Celebrating international dance film through our festival and year-round programming.
The Vault: Bay Area Legends | SFDFF
Next month, SFDFF opens The Vault and shines a light on the early work of four Bay Area Legends.
On Thursday, June 6th at the Delancey Street Theater, San Francisco, the San Francisco Dance Film Festival honors four Bay Area choreographers - Ellen Bromberg, Joe Goode, Margaret Jenkins, and Brenda Way - and the filmmakers with whom they created historic dance films for national public television.
In 1989, the PBS series “Alive From Off Center” made an unprecedented pitch to KQED TV to produce collaborative dance pieces representing the best dance in San Francisco. The result was three films produced for KQED by Linda Schaller: “Shorebirds Atlantic”, “The Black Dress”, and “29 Effeminate Gestures”. The fourth film on our program, “Loose the Thread”, came two years later as part of a full-length program celebrating ODC/Dance’s 20th anniversary.
The success and longevity of these films are a testament to the quality of the Bay Area choreographers, dancers, and production teams involved that were tasked with reinterpreting the avant-garde dance works for television.
The screening followed by a conversation with the four choreographers. Please join us as we raise a glass to our amazing local dance artists and filmmakers. They are still making history!
The films screened are used by permission of Twin Cities Public Television and KQED, Inc.

I saw the documentary. Great film! I really liked the scene where Steven sat down with Aalansia and gave her strong advice about making wrong choices and where they can lead. Thank you for being a great role model for the community and for reminding us of the great art form of ballet dancing.
That’s the kind of odd I was born to peruse. And it was all shot in the place I was born!
FABULOUS! You ARE onto something SO special!❤
Too Amazing
Ein sehr vielseitiges Video, gefällt mir!😊

🎉❤ So Beautiful!!
❤❤Love your dancing and your movie ,Call me dancer!
This reminds me of my days in clubs - mid 70s to early 80s. Fun fun fun!
I don't know why it took me this long to find this...Especially the Skinny pop scene which totally resonated with me! Well done. Thanks.

I love this Mann ❤❤❤
This dancer understood it all at a very young age and that makes him special and very charismatic. Living his passion, being humble and grateful is the most important. I am an artist painter and needed to become 54 years old to understand that becoming an example to others by living my dream/ creativity and share my works with others is what makes us rich and money just follows...
I love Morgan but you couldn't interview any Irish people?
Elegant
Fascinating!
❤ Thank youuuuuu ❤
🌬️🔥🔥🤍🌞
Figuras corporales y emocionales como PINA B.

Adore Ekmann and SF! Brilliant! Bravo!
This would be cool if it was 2008
Wow good job 😃
Oh my God this is incredible
“Cold Storage” takes place on a desolate arctic shore, where a lonely ice fisherman discovers his prehistoric counterpart frozen in the sea ice, and thaws him out as his newfound soul brother. A wild all-night drinking and dancing party ensues. The film won an audience favorite award at SFDFF 2017 and encored at the 2019 edition of the festival!
IL 17 di Giunio !
Very inspirational.
The Trocks perform his pas de deux so much better!
Боже!!! Как это красиво!!!
Brilliant! Thanks for uploading. More please.
I'm a classically trained ballerina and this is not ballet. A pas de duex is done between a male and female dancer, not two men or two wemen. It is no longer a pas de duex if either of those is taking place. Words have meaning.
Exactly, you can’t go from partner to being partnered. It’s so.. untraditional. Some may argue that times are changing but there is beauty in tradition, a pas de due x is a dance between a male and FEMALE dancer.
go cry about it
I'm also a classically trained professional dancer and i do speak French. A pas de DEUX (and not duex) literally means "a dance for two". There is no mention whatsoever of the sex of the dancers. I agree that the classical pas de deux of the répertoire of the 19th century are traditionally danced by a man a woman. But same sex pas de deux have been here for decades. One cannot say that "les chants du compagnon errant" choreographed by Bejart for Nyreyev and Bortoluzzi in the 70s aren't part of the répertoire. And before the 19th century, I remember reading that male parts in the ballet were sometimes danced by women, ergo ps de deux were danced by two women.
Beautiful! Gorgeous feet and legs.
This is so amazing they're beautiful together!!
I'd love to hear them talk about their prep for this. I wonder how it was to transition from partner to being partnered?
I'm not sure if they answer this exact question, but if you head over to ballet22.com there is lots of media about the company!
Абсолютная безвкусица😮
Gorgeous! They both did so well! The dancer en pointe has incredible balance. Love to see the celebration of ballet's diverse community :)
We agree!! <3
